June Frugal Food Challenge

$
0
0
In June we have decided to step up our frugalness level and focus on food, I think this is where our money saving endeavours fall short so it seems like the best place to start a challenge.

Cut The Crap

One of our biggest downfalls when it comes to trying to live a budget/money saving life is spending too much on junk food, mainly chocolate. Not only is this having an impact on our budget it's also causing some of the health problems I've been suffering lately so it seems a no brainer to wean myself off those sugars and nasty's.

I've challenged myself to 'no chocolate' months before and have been successful but this month I want to cut out all the crap, that means no takeaway's, crisps, biscuits, sweeties or chocolate for the whole month of June.

It will be interesting to see what impact this has on our budget, my moods will also be quite interesting too ! (sugar addict much?).

Waste Nothing

I'm going to plan our meals and shopping list better so I know exactly what we need for each meal, I don't like waste but we do seem to still throw a few things away each week.

I've already started buying loose fruit and vegetables which is helping so I will continue to do this.

Repeat Repeat Repeat

One of my big frustrations is trying to think of different meals to cook each week, this seems so silly when I think about it,  as much as it's nice to try something new every so often we know what we like so this month we will be having the same meals each week, this should make meal planning so much easier.

All of the above should have a significant impact on our budget and our waistlines hopefully, I will be back at the end of June with an update and I will have to think of a frugal challenge for July.

If you have an tips or ideas for me please leave me a comment below, I would love to hear from you.

Money Monday - Five Tips To Avoid Impulse Spending

$
0
0
I think no matter how frugal and money saving we try to be there is always that impulsive urge to spend, the impulse can be quite strong and sometimes it's easy to lose track of your long term goals for that immediate adrenaline rush that comes with purchasing something you want but don't necessarily need.

Here are a my top five tips for curbing those impulsive spending sprees.

1. Avoid temptation, simple really, if you know that browsing in shops encourages you to spend then either stay home or just go into the shops where there are things you actually need to buy then go home.

2. Unsubscribe from temptation, if you are a sucker for a special offer email or the lure of a new seasons wardrobe on your favourite retailers website is too much for you then I suggest you unsubscribe from those emails and un-follow those retailers on social media, don't let FOMO get the better of you !

3. Distract yourself, we all have those jobs around the house that we really should do, make yourself a list and get on with it, make the home you live in and the things you own work for you so you don't feel the need to replace them.

4. Only carry cash, the action of paying with physical cash forces you to see where your money is going, it's easy to become disconnected and justify impulse spending when you swipe or punch a number in.

5. Remind yourself it's not forever, if you are being frugal or saving money and have a goal in sight then visualise that day when you will have spare cash again and will be able to treat yourself to the things you want but remember that experiences and people will bring you more joy than things ever will.

How do you curb your impulsive spending ? leave me a comment below I would love to hear from you.

Despite comping my butt off in May it's not yet yielded any results, no winning emails for me this week but I am still waiting on a few prizes I won last month.

Comping is on the back burner for this month while I concentrate on all the new survey sites I've signed up to but I still have a few nice freebies to share with you this week.

My prize from Holland's Pies Facebook page finally arrived after a bit of chasing, I love the radio and Daisy loves the ball.

This lovely freebie from Huggies arrived, there is a photo competition running on their site too which we will definitely be entering.

It's been ages since I applied for a project on Savvy Circle so I was really happy to get accepted on this Bold 2 in 1 trial, it smells amazing and they sent a generous amount of samples and coupons too.

I cashed out another £10 Argos voucher from Consumer Pulse this week, Im' already half way to affording a bike for Daisy for Christmas.

These great little freebies came from SoPost, you need to be eagle eyed and spot them on Facebook and Twitter, you can send them to friends and hope that they are generous enough to return the favour.

If you use Click Snap on Quidco you can claim the £1 back for these making them totally free, there are plenty of other great offers on there too.

Quite a good week for freebies as you can see, hope you have had some nice wins and freebies this week, leave me a comment below I love to hear from you.

This Week At The Webster's - Grumpy Kids, Crazy Weather, Water Fun and A Nice Surprise

Last week started off with rubbish weather and even more rubbish moods, Jake is teething again and he's been really grumpy he's also upped his level of finding things to touch that he shouldn't be and Daisy has been an absolute terror both at home and at school.

The weather this week has been totally nuts, Monday was so cold and I was almost tempted to put the heating on, I dug out a big jumper instead, following that we have had a few beautiful days of sunshine and warmth that you would expect in June.

We made the most of the nice days by playing in the garden and when I couldn't remember where I had put the paddling pool we improvised and had some water fun anyway.

We had a nice surprise yesterday, Chris's work van went in for it's MOT and failed so we have a courtesy car for the weekend, regular readers will know that we have been carless lately as it's off the road while we save to fix it so we're making the most of having a car this weekend, we went to a local beauty spot today and have plans to go swimming to tomorrow.

I will be back next week to let you know what we've been up to, hope you have all had a good week.

Money Monday - Finding What Works For You

$
0
0
When you decide to embark on a money saving, frugal living or money making journey you are full of motivation and enthusiasm, but keeping the momentum up can prove difficult.

Deciding to live this lifestyle can sometimes be tough, especially in the down times when nothing seems to be moving and you feel like you've exhausted every avenue, you can lose sight of your goals and wasting all your hard work by spending can seem very tempting.

When you feel like this don't give up, sit down with a notepad and pen and reassess ! here my top tips for finding what works for you.

Be Honest

Is there something you are doing that isn't working for you, do you resent those surveys that bring in pennies or are you fed up of cutting coupons for items you will probably never use, write everything down that you do to save/make money and go through them one by one, be honest with yourself is there something that is saving or making you a little money but is eating up a lot of time ?

It helps to reassess every month and don't be scared to simply stop doing something if it isn't getting you any closer to your goals.

As a personal example I've just recently joined a lot of new survey sites, some are paying really well others are just tedious but I'm giving them a month then I'm going to sit down with the figures and decide which ones are worth my time and which aren't, it's really as simple as that.

Work To Your Strengths

When it comes to living frugally or making some extra money you really have to it within the boundaries of what you feel comfortable with, although I do believe in trying new things and pushing my boundaries but ultimately doing what's right for me.

I think what I'm trying to say is there are no hard and fast rules, you are not in competition with anyone, you don't need to the most extreme money saver or the best at living frugally, just do the best you can and find what fits for you and your family.

Let Others Inspire You

I love learning about what other people do to make a little extra money or what frugal money saving ideas they are using, you can read about some of my favourite blogs on the subject here I'm going to be listing more this week too.

I find so much inspiration and motivation from people who are trying to live the same lifestyle as I am.

I really hope these tips help you if you are feeling a little burnt out by all the budgeting, saving and making money, think about how good it will feel when you reach your financial goals.

If you have any tips of your own please feel free to share them with me, I love hearing from you.

I promised I would be back to share some more of my favourite frugal and money saving/making bloggers with you, if you are looking for inspiration and motivation then I really suggest you check them out.

KEENE ON SAVING

I've followed Bex on her other blog for years, in fact she's one of the first ones I came across when I started looking for blogs to read so I was really excited to see her start writing about personal finance, she has got some great advice on there, I've learnt so much from her.

FROM ALDI TO HARRODS

When I found Emma's blog last year I devoured all her posts in a couple of days, she offers fantastic advice about making and saving money, she really knows what she's talking about.

KATYKICKER'S BAKES, MAKES AND MONEY MAKING ESCAPADES

I only found Katy recently though joining The Money Shed, she's like the Yoda of online earning and she's lovely as well. Her blog and her advice is really motivating me to try new ways of earning online.

PENNY GOLIGHTLY

This is another recent favourite, oh my goodness the thrifty recipes look delicious and her 'Tenner Week' challenges are just brilliant.

That should be enough to keep you going until next week when I will be sharing some of my favourite American frugal bloggers with you.

Please do leave me a comment if there is a blog you love or if you have one yourself so I can have a read.

Exploring Our Local Area: A Family Afternoon at Wigg Island

$

Last weekend was bad news for Chris's work van as it failed it's MOT but it was great news for us as it meant we had a courtesy car for the weekend, regular reader's will know that we have been car-less for a few months, it's currently sat on our drive waiting for it's MOT next week, depending on the cost to repair we will decide whether to save the money to fix it or to become car free for the foreseeable.

We decided to take full advantage and visit a local beauty spot close to home, we chose Wigg Island in Runcorn, despite it being close to the power station and the very busy Runcorn bridge it's actually very peaceful and a lovely to walk around.

The car park is free which always ticks a big yes box for us and there is absolutely nowhere to spend any money so again a huge tick in the frugal day out box.

Daisy loved having the freedom to run about, she love spotting the birds and although most of the canal walk is closed until October there was still a section open with plenty of ducks and swans for her to feed.

There are also a few wooden carved statues on the walk and some bird watching hides.

There is a visitor centre but we have never been when it's open so I'm not sure what's in there but Daisy loved the wind turbine that's next to it.

We are so lucky to have all these lovely nature walks right on our doorstep and if our little car makes it we will definitely be exploring lots more.

I'm still on a sabbatical from comping at the moment, it's doing me the world of good to have a little break and pursue something different to see what suits me best, I've been thinking carefully about what I actually want to win so when I start again I will be focussing on those things and not be tempted by things I really don't need.

I've had a couple of nice freebies arrive this week and a prize from a new survey community I've joined but I totally forgot to take a photo and I've worn the t-shirt and given the pen to Chris but I'm keeping the beautiful Moleskine notepad for myself.

This is the book I won for Daisy and Jake last week, she absolutely loves it.

This bib was from an Asda competition online, there were quite a few being given away.

This beautiful limited edition Bourjois mascara was another great freebie from SoPost.

I'm not sure where this came from but it's certainly needed !

I think I applied for this Burt's Bees sample ages ago and had forgotten all about it so it was a nice surprise.

I will be back next week to share some more goodies with you.

This Week at the Webster's - Operation Declutter, Baby Eats Spider and Not Much Else

I wasn't sure if it was worth writing a post this week, I've been that busy on my decluttering that I've barely taken any photo's or done much else to write about.

If you look back at this time last year I was doing exactly the same thing and I could kick myself that I've let it build up again, I've been absolutely ruthless this time, everything must go !

This morning I noticed Jake was chomping on something, to my horror it was a spider, he did spit it out though so it can't have been that tasty.

So that's it for this week, tomorrow should she the end of the decluttering of the house so I should have plenty of time to squeeze something a bit more fun in next week.

I will leave you with a couple of photo's I did take, Jake's new buggy and Daisy doing important paperwork.

Money Monday - 5 Ways You Can Save Money In Your Home Right Now

$
0
0
This week I thought I would give you five tips that we follow to save money at home, these simple things might only save you a few pounds but when you are starting on a frugal money saving journey such small things really do make all the difference.

Ditch The Dryer

This time last year I would not be giving you this piece of advice as I was a tumble dryer addict, I'm more than happy to tell you that I'm not fully recovered now I'm just addicted to weather apps on my phone and obsessive about line drying.

Joking apart, if you have a busy household where the washing basket seems never ending you can save a ton of money by line drying or using a clothes horse, get inventive on a rainy day and use coat hangers and every available hanging space, this also gives you the added bonus of making your home smell lovely and fresh.

Stock Take, Use It Up & Meal Plan

Have a stock take of all the food you have in your cupboards, fridge and freezer, you can even extend this to your toiletries and cleaning products, make a list of every single item.

Take a good look at the list and on a separate piece of paper write down any meals you know you can make from everything you already have in, try to use it all up before buying anything else, again become inventive.

When you have used up all your stock make yourself a weekly meal plan and only buy exactly what you need to avoid waste and lower your costs.

Learn How To Do It Yourself

They say that prevention is better than cure and this is never more true than in your home, the best way to avoid costly repairs is to maintain and learn how to do simple repairs yourself.

You can read about how I repaired our hoover instead of replacing it here , I got some great advice from watching YouTube tutorials and searching for a solution online.

Just think of all the extra money you could save by not paying someone else to do it !

Turn It Off !

I'm in a constant battle with my husband about switching things off and not just leaving them on standby, I know it probably only saves pennies but we all know what they make don't we ?

The same applies to lights, if it's not dark then simply don't put them on or switch them off when you leave the room and always use energy saving light bulbs.

You could also save money in this area by looking at your TV subscriptions and cutting them if you find you are not watching half the channels you are paying for.

Weather Proof

One of the biggest areas every household can save money on is their energy costs, making simple changes according to the season can really help.

Get creative in the winter, use tin foil down the back of your radiators, hang a thick curtain over your front door, close all your doors and make your own draught excluders.

In summer instead of using electric fans open all your windows, make a homemade fan out of card even better get someone to stand and fan you ! keep plenty of ice in the freezer and cool yourself down with a cold drink.

I hope you find some of these tips useful, if you have any tips of your own to share leave me a comment below I would love to hear them.

Free Fun From The Library

After being stuck indoors with two poorly little ones and not feeling so great myself I decided that what we needed was some fresh air and something to take our minds off our snotty noses, as we had some books to return it seemed like the ideal place would be the library.

We are so lucky to have two libraries within walking distance of our house, both have a lovely little children's area with a few toys and activities as well as a great range of books and all for free.

I always have a quick scout of the library for information about events they might be running, they sometimes offer craft sessions and reading time for the little ones, I spotted a table they had set out for National Bookstart Week, I picked up a lovely little book called 'Rumble in the Jungle' and some activity sheets all for free.

When we got home we looked at the books we had borrowed, Daisy coloured in her mask, not sure I've ever seen an elephant like that one !

We played snap and matching pairs with the animal cards, coloured in the jungle scene and talked about the noises that jungle animals make, keeping an eye out for unexpected freebies is definitely worth it and it distracted us from feeling sorry for ourselves for the afternoon.

You can out about future events and more at the Bookstart website.

Starting from next month I'm going to be trying something different in the way I tell you about the goodies I receive every week, I want to merge prizes, coupons, freebies and bargains all into one post.

I need a new title so please feel free to leave me any suggestions below as I really struggling to come up with one.

The first thing to arrive this week was a full sized Olay Total Effects from SoPost and Tesco Beauty on Twitter it was sent to me by Laura @couponcrazycat who has a great blog and YouTube channel about couponing and freebies, she's even inspired me to download some cashback apps to get some free goodies.

I think beauty was the theme of the week, I got this sample of Lancôme Genifique serum and a little spray sample of Dior for men which smells rather nice, I love it when they send these instead of the scented paper.

I had a winning letter for the first time in a while, I've won Daisy some craft sets I will no doubt show them to you when they arrive.

This sample of Ainsley Harriott cous cous came from their Facebook page, you had to be quick off the mark at 10am to get one.

I've joined another campaign at Tesco Orchard, I've got a £3 voucher to get some fruit or vegetables for free and some 75p coupons to pass along to friends and family.

I'm pleased to see the amount of decent freebie's picking up again, have you had anything good this week, leave me a comment below I love to hear from you.

This Week At The Webster's - Poorly Again ! , Little Girl Bakes And Baby Learns To Draw

This week has been full of ups and downs but that's life I suppose at least it's never boring, Daisy is poorly again and has had to take yet another week off school, she's having a blood test on Monday to try and find out why it keeps happening, I'm sure it's nothing serious but there's always that niggling little doubt at the back of my mind.

Jake decided he didn't want to be left out and joined in with a snotty nose and a poorly cough, Chris and I have both been feeling under the weather too so it's not been much fun in our house, despite this I have managed to get lots of jobs done this week as well as a trip to the library which you can read about here .

On Friday Daisy and I decided to do some baking, I found a really simple recipe for short bread in fact I think it's the easiest thing we have ever made, Daisy loves cooking and baking so I'm more than happy to encourage it.

I thought it was about time that I showed Jake that crayons are not just for munching on (blue teeth anyone ?) he really enjoyed making marks on the paper oh and the floor of course, I also found him eating a glue stick but that's a story for another day !

We had to say goodbye to our Lemon (read car) this week, we had done all we could to get it back and running but it's not to be, we will be car free for the foreseeable future, we are feeling a little deflated but trying to look at the positives.

I hope that next week see's us all on the mend and that Daisy isn't too traumatised from having her bloods taken, I will be back to let you know how it went.

Bargains I've Bagged This Week

I love reading blog posts about bargains and charity/thrift shop finds so I thought I would try and make this a regular feature.

Unintentionally this weeks bargain theme is all about the little ones in my life, after having a huge declutter last week I decided that I wanted to build up a good supply of fun but educational toys and books for Daisy and Jake so I've been scouting out the selling pages on Facebook as well as the free sites for potential bargains.

On Saturday we had popped into Aldi to buy some bread and milk when we spotted an absolute bargain in the entrance, a TP swing reduced to £19.99 we had planned on picking one up for next Summer but couldn't resist at that price !

I have been making a short list of toys I want for the little ones for Christmas and had been looking at this farm but the cheapest I could find it was £34.99 so I was delighted to find it on a selling page for £5, it's in fantastic condition and the children have spent hours playing with it today.

Another brilliant bargain came from Facebook as well, all these books for £4, they are in lovely condition and just what I was looking for.

The lady I bought the books from was giving this away for free ! Jake has had great fun tonight slotting the coins in and Daisy has been helping him.

I hope you enjoy reading this sort of post, I would love to hear about any bargains you've found leave me a comment a below.

I'm back again to share with you what lovely goodies I've had through the post and if you read last weeks post you will know that I'm going to be changing the way that I share this with you.

To let you know about the prizes and freebies I receive each week in the post I will be linking up with 'Look In My Letterbox' which is hosted by the lovely Alice Megan every Saturday.

I will be posting any bargains and free finds on a separate dedicated post although this might be a more sporadic posting.

Anyway I hope you enjoy looking at what's arrived this week.

I had another great freebie from SoPost, a can of the new Tropical Red Bull.

A sample of the new Ultimate Blends shampoo, conditioner and serum.

I applied for this MAC mascara quite a while ago so thought I might have missed out but it finally arrived this week.

This gorgeous little book arrived from the Annabel Karmel club giveaway, we have been really lucky and have won a fair few of their giveaways in the past.

I cashed out a £10 Argos voucher from Consumer Pulse.

This sample of Organix porridge is from Asda they had hundreds to give away earlier in the month, Jake will be enjoying this for his breakfast in the morning.

This generous sized sample of Dentyl mouthwash arrived this morning.

This prize arrived this week, Daisy will love them.

I did have a surprise prize turn up but it's going in the Christmas box so I'm not posting a picture.

Have you had anything nice in the post this week ? let me know in the comments I love hearing from you.

This Week At The Webster's - Garden Fun, Baby Stands Up, Good Results and Mummy Gets Scared

$

Last week seems to have flown by, we have had some really lovely weather here in the North West so we have been spending lots of time playing in the garden, we even got the paddling pool out.

Jake has been using every available prop to help him stand up, he can manage about 20 seconds no hands before he falls on his bum, I've no concerns about him not walking yet, Daisy was 14 months when she walked and Jake will do it in his own time like everything else.

If you read last weeks post I mentioned that Daisy was going for a blood test to find out why she keeps getting poorly, she was so brave and didn't cry when she had the test and her results have all come back normal which is such a relief.

Last night I used some free tickets I had for the cinema and went to Insidious 3 with my cousin and eldest daughter, I used to be a hardcore horror fan but they frighten me to death nowadays, I was determined to do my best not to jump as much as usual as my film buddies always make fun of me but I failed spectacularly when I jumped that much that I almost ended up on the floor !

Chris has a very rare weekend off so we are spending it doing not very much at all, I think we both deserve it, it's been a long hard month.
